The article represents the first in Russian historiography the study specifically aimed at identifying the source base of Ryurik’s research: where, when, under what circumstances, documents and narratives appear the first reports of the Varangian Prince Rurik, who is traditionally considered the ancestor of the first reigning dynasty in Russia. Exceptionally late appearance in the sources mentions about Rurik leads the author to the conclusion about the fraudulent nature of the varangian genealogy.
