Профессор ветхозаветной критики и экзегезы Йельской богословской школы.
Родился в 1946 г. Получил бакалаврскую и магистерскую степени в University College Dublin. Докторскую диссертацию (PhD) защитил в Гарвардском университете.
Преподавал в University of Notre Dame (1985–91 гг.), а также параллельно в Гарвардском и Чикагском университетах (1991-2000 гг.).
В 2002 г. являлся президентом Society of Biblical Literature.
Работал главным редактором научных журналов "Dead Sea Discoveries", "Supplements to the Journal for the Study of Judaism" и "Journal of Biblical Literature".
С 2000 г. преподает в Йельской богословской школе.
